Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet

The bestselling author of Deep Economy shows that we’re living on a fundamentally altered planet — and opens our eyes to the kind of change we’ll need in order to make our civilization endure.

Twenty years ago, with The End of Nature, Bill McKibben offered one of the earliest warnings about global warming. Those warnings went mostly unheeded; now, he insists, we need to acknowledge that we’ve waited too long, and that massive change is not only unavoidable but already under way. Our old familiar globe is suddenly melting, drying, acidifying, flooding, and burning in ways that no human has ever seen. We’ve created, in very short order, a new planet, still recognizable but fundamentally different. We may as well call it Eaarth.

That new planet is filled with new binds and traps. A changing world costs large sums to defend — think of the money that went to repair New Orleans, or the trillions of dollars it will take to transform our energy systems. But the endless economic growth that could underwrite such largesse depends on the stable planet we’ve managed to damage and degrade. We can’t rely on old habits any longer.

Our hope depends, McKibben argues, on scaling back — on building the kind of societies and economies that can hunker down, concentrate on essentials, and create the type of community (in the neighborhood, but also on the Internet) that will allow us to weather trouble on an unprecedented scale. Change — fundamental change — is our best hope on a planet suddenly and violently out of balance.

The Billionaire Wins the Game (Melody Anne)

Featured Book Review: The Billionaire Wins the Game
( 214+ Reviews )
Andrea Fuentes

As the first book in the Billionaire Bachelors series, Melody Anne makes a great first impression with an interesting novel to say the least, involving Amy, a woman that had to work hard her entire life to get even the basic necessities and Lucas, the son and now head of a billion dollar corporation, as they travel through forbidden waters in an employee/employer love affair. The twist is that it was completely planned by Lucas father Joseph, as a ploy to make his son happy.

By chapter three I was already in tears. I was rooting for Amy to be able to get everything she wanted although I must say that Lucas did seem like quite the commanding, if not borderline abusive, man.

When both of them would let their guards down and actually enjoy what was happening I could only put myself in Amys position and wish I were her. I found myself lost in the book, as it was an easy read from start to finish. The beginning reminded me almost of Roald Dahls Matilda with the explanation of Amys poor upbringing and her escape to libraries as spaces of solitude and safety.

I am eager to move on to the second book of the series, The Billionaires Dance. Melody Anne has a way with pulling readers into the stories and bringing forward intricacies almost too real to be fiction. She does a great job of allowing readers to see the sides of both characters which helps to create a passion to cheer for them and hope they will both just give in and be happy.

The Billionaire Wins the Game also sends a powerful message to those of us that are stubborn, hardheaded, and reluctant to give in to the moment afraid of being even the slightest bit vulnerable. The message tells us that sometimes it is alright to let your guard down because sometimes if you dont you might just lose the best thing in your life. Melody Anne definitely won me over with this is a book as I am already recommending to friends, peers, and acquaintances.

The Billionaire Wins the Game has received two thumbs up from me for sure. As a pondering point, I think it would make an interesting story line for a movie as well.
