So you have spent countless hours, days, months brainstorming ideas and writing your book and you are finally finished. Now what?

You need a cover for your book but where do you start? Here are a few tips and tricks that will make your book catch the eye of future long-term fans.

5. Create a Cover for your Intended Audience. If your book is intended for young adults then you must make your cover captivate that demographic. Take a look at some polls or studies. Do they tie in with the theme of your book? If so, it must be bold. Put a twist on it. It’s bound to catch more than a few eyes.

4. Stand Clear of Overused Images. Be as original as possible. Look at things from a different perspective or use out of the ordinary colors or fonts. Your readers should say “Wow! I’ve never seen that before”. This will guarantee that your cover will remain memorable and this will lead to it being talked about.

3. Stay on Topic. The cover has to connect with the book. If not, you will definitely confuse your readers and upset a lot of potential fans with unrelated illustrations. Be honest and your readers will remain loyal.

2. Let the Fans Decide. If you have a following on any kind of social media site this is perfect for getting first hand opinions and suggestions for a cover. Tell your fans the main idea of the book and let them give you great ideas for your cover. Let others think outside the box for you.

1. Pick a Designer. Hold a competition or a contest with your fans and pick the best of the best to illustrate for you long-term. Who would know your writing better than your fans? It’s a great way for you to network, meet new people, create employment and increase your creativity bubble.

S. L. Carson’s “War Unicorn”  is a great example of a great cover. Her illustration is synonymous with the title and her font and lettering is unique. Also, she leaves just enough mystery to captivate her designed audience so that they would want to pick up this book and immerse themselves in this story.
