How to Market a Book without going Broke
Angela Sturm
So you have achieved that lifelong dream of becoming a published writer!
Now you just have to sit back and wait for the money to roll in, becoming the next J.K. Rowling or not. Getting a book printed these days is fairly easy when self-publishing, but how do you get your name out there, how do you get people to notice your masterpiece and purchase your book without spending a fortune? The answer is by marketing. Below are just a few of the many options available to get your work out there!
Social Media
This one is a no brainer and more than likely you have already utilized Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and email with the resulting sales coming from friends and family, but have you joined any online chat forums for writers such as WritersChatRoom.com? Chat forums are not only great for mere support but also for connecting with other writers and getting some name recognition.
Dont forget to blog!
Blogging allows the public to experience your writing. Use this to get constructive feedback as well as gaining followers, those who follow you like your work and will purchase your book.
Networking
Start networking with other writers, publishers and journalists. This can be done in a number of ways like conferences and workshops.
Non-traditional Approaches
Many small communities have fundraisers of all sorts to support on-going initiatives. Contact sponsors of these events to get on the roster, donate a copy of your book and offer to speak or volunteer.
Another not so traditional approach would be to talk to small business and hobby store owners. Most support the local arts. Also, neighborhood coffee shops will many times allow you to set up a book reading/signing and will sell your books on consignment.
Press Release
Spend time preparing a press release. Do your research! When submitting a press kit to the papers it will be important to know your audience and to show you are the expert of what you wrote. Just like your book, the first sentence will either captivate or the release will see the inside of a garbage can.

Have your book reviewed
There is no better way to get some constructive feedback than with a book review. Book reviews make you aware of any cleanup needed before you begin promoting your work. There are many affordable and professional services available that specialize in book reviews. One such service is through GoodbooksToday.com.
Finally, be patient. Putting in the time and effort will bring its rewards. After all, you spent a season writing, working towards a dream, so invest just a little more time, you’re almost there, and before you know it, the New York Times will be labeling your book a best seller.
